Bali reportMORE ON BALI'S TERROR
JAKARTA POST, 10.02.03 Bali blast death toll reaches 202
DENPASAR, Bali (Agencies): The Bali bombings in October, carried out by a regional terror network, killed 202 people from 21 countries, in what is believed to be the final death toll, Bali police spokesman Lt. Col. Yatim Suyatmo said here on Tuesday. "A disaster victims identification team of foreign and local forensic experts has completed four months of work on the resort island, identifying a total 199 victims -- only eight of whom died in other countries or en route," Yatim told AFP. Three bodies had yet to be identified, he said, and 140 bags of body parts had been collected. Officials have said the bags will be buried on the island. "This appears to be the final figure regarding the dead as there will no longer be any official team working on further identification," Suyatmo asserted. Australia suffered the greatest number of casualties, losing 88 nationals, followed by Indonesia (38), Britain (23), Sweden (nine), the United States (seven), Germany (six) and the Netherlands (four). Denmark, New Zealand and France each lost three nationals; South Africa, Japan, South Korea and Brazil two; and Singapore, Taiwan, Italy, Portugal, Ecuador, Poland and Canada each had one national among the dead. Thirty people have been arrested, all Indonesians, and nine more are being sought. Key suspects could face the death penalty under a new antiterror decree.
