in Indonesia" PowerPoint Presentation (~5.8MB)
What once happened in far off corners of the world such as Sudan, is now
on our very own doorstep. For the last three years Christian minorities in Eastern
Indonesia have suffered incredible persecution at the hands of Islamic
extremists. Thousands of lives have been lost and many Christians, under
threat of death, have been forced Islamised. Those fortunate enough to escape
now face great hardships as displaced people within their own country. And
now, after wreaking destruction in Maluku and Central Sulawesi, there are new
Jihad threats in areas such as North Sulawesi and Papua. For the most part
the international community has chosen not to get involved in what is falsely
reported as 'local communal violence'. Meanwhile, Islamic hardliners are
planning how best to advance their agenda of enshrining Shariah law in the
Indonesian constitution. We cannot sit back and do nothing!
Cry Indonesia is an initiative to raise awareness of our
brothers and sisters in Christ in Indonesia. As near neighbours, the
Australian Church has a special mandate and a strategic opportunity to rise
up and show the love of Christ to the Indonesian church and to the nation:
"remember those who are suffering as if you yourselves were
suffering", Heb 13:3b
There is much we can do but the most important is PRAYER. In December, 2001,
63 000 Christians were in imminent danger in the town of Tentena, Central
Sulawesi. The church in many countries was mobilised to pray and a massacre
was averted! Praise the Lord!! The Christians of Central Sulawesi say,
'thankyou', but now, together with other suffering brothers and sisters in
Maluku and Papua, plead with us to continue to pray for them.
We encourage Christians from around the world, but especially within
Australia, to join with thousands of other Australian Christians in praying for
the nation of Indonesia and especially for the persecuted church. Mobilise
your family, cell group, and congregation to be a part of this. Set aside a
night, a week, or the whole month.
